Bass & Crappie Fall Fishing Tips

Most fall activities include football, hunting, and indoor activities while fishing falls to the wayside.  Fall fishing could be the most cherished fishing season if anglers would give it a chance.   With the cooler temps, less boat traffic, and the beauty of the fall foliage fall can be the most enjoyable season to be on the water fishing.  Speaking of fall foliage, Lake of the Ozarks was named the 2nd best place in the United States to view the fall colors.

Bass Fishing

  • Getting the big bite can be tough at times but knowing what you are doing can bring in a large quantity and quality of bass.
  • Bass are known for feeding on shad in the fall to prepare for the winter.   Fishing with lipless crankbaits with a tight wobble is great when bass are feeding.
  • Wait for the bass to strike on shad in shallow grass, pull your lipless through the grass and hook your bass.
  • Get ready to work your cadence with a soft plastic jerk bait when the fish are jumping out of the water to grab shad.  Your live well will be full in no time with this technique
  • Shad is the key to fall fishing, placing a swimbait in front of the school can be the key to catching bass.  When fishing with swimbait, you may have to cover a lot of water to find the school of shad.
  • If you are fishing off the dock spinnerbaits are a great way to get bass to strike.
  • Buzzfrogs are another great way to trick the bass into thinking they are having a toad for dinner.
Knowing which baits to use and what areas to fish are key to fall fishing.  With these few tips fall may become your favorite season to fish for bass.

Crappie Fishing

After the lake turns in the fall, fishing for crappie can get tricky.  Crappie can be found in deep, shallow, or any water in between after the turnover.  Crappies' choice of living space is influenced by the oxygen content, light, and availability of food.

The water will start clearing after the turnover and crappie will find themselves near timber in the water.

  • If it’s a bright sunny day, crappie will be toward the bottom of the lake.
  • If it’s a cloudy or windy day you are more apt to find the fish within a few feet of the water surface.
  • Don’t stay too long at one tree.  If you aren’t getting any bites, move on to the next tree.
  • Once your lure hits the bottom, slowly raise your line up the tree, this is your best chance to get the crappie to strike your line.

Picking the best lure or bait to fish within the fall is very important.  Weather and water conditions are key to picking the best bait.

Using small lures on a light line is a great option after the turnover and the fish are in deeper water.

Minnows are also a great bait for fall fishing.  Make sure the minnow still looks lively after rigged.

Bringing a mix of lures and minnows for a crappie outing in the fall is your best bet for having a great day on the water.
