Safe Boating Tips for Nation Safe Boating Week 2021

BE AWARE OF THE WEATHER FORECAST BEFORE HEADING OUT.

Weather is UNPREDICTABLE. You never know what may happen and the weather can change quickly. It may be 80+ degrees when you head out on the water, but by the time you start to head back in for the evening, the temperatures could have dropped into the low 60s. Check the forecast before you go. Make sure to pack some extra clothes for warmth, just in case Bring a rain jacket, just in case it's raining on your way back in too.

PLAN FOR THE WORST AND HOPE FOR THE BEST.

Don't let a little mishap that happens while on the boat, ruin your day. Plan ahead. Pack a small dry bag with your cell phone if there’s reception in the area, some warm clothes, first aid kit, and some high-energy snacks. Keep these items in your life jacket: Vehicle keys, whistle, knife, lighter or waterproof matches, fire starters, and an energy bar. Here's the thing. Plan for what the weather COULD do. Plan for injuries that COULD happen. Plan for HUNGER cravings that MAY occur. Also, have some FUN while boating!

STAY HYDRATED AND ENERGIZED WHILE OUT ON THE WATER.

You need proper nutrition and hydration to keep your body energized! Make sure to pack enough snacks and beverages for the entire day for everyone on the boat with you. It may not be a bad idea to have an extra reserve of food and drinks on the boat in case of an accident or if you get stranded overnight.

ALWAYS KEEP ENOUGH LIFE JACKETS ON BOARD FOR EVERYONE.

By law, you must have enough life jackets on board for yourself and all passengers. You may not be wearing it the whole time, but you need to be able to get to it in case of emergency!
