The weather is looking up and the weekend is almost here! Get ready to have a great time on the water by preparing with important safety tips so you don't have to worry during your weekend of fun. Firstmate Controls prioritizes safety above all else. In fact, that's why we first created our Remote Boat Lift Control System. Read on and learn how to get ready for a safe and fun weekend of boating.

Complete a Float Plan

Floating plans are important documents that boaters fill out before heading out on the water for a day, or weekend, of boating. A float plan helps others know where you will be and when in case anything happens. This is particularly important if you plan to go floating or boating on a large body of water or on a river. The most important information to include on your float plan is how many people are coming with you, who they are, how long you plan to be out, and which destinations you plan to travel to.

Pack Well!

You may be tempted to just hop on the boat and get going, but it is important to make sure you have everything necessary for a fun and safe trip on the water. Make a checklist of everything you need to pack for each boating trip. Or, better yet, keep a storage tub of these important items ready to go anytime you're ready to get out on the boat. Make sure to include at least these seven items:
  1. Life jackets for each person on board, rated for the correct weight
  2. Boat fenders and buoys to protect the boat during docking
  3. Fire extinguisher
  4. Basic first-aid gear in case of an emergency
  5. Map or navigation system
  6. Navigation lights (There may be specific regulations where you boat.
  7. Sunscreen and sunglasses to block dangerous UV rays

Have Fun!

Once you have completed your float plan and packed all the essentials, the only thing left to do is have a great time on the water! With all of the stress going around, it's important to take time to relax and enjoy the fresh air and nature.
