Get Licensed for National Safe Boating Week!

This week, May 16th - May 22nd, is National Safe Boating Week! Boating season is in full swing and the unofficial start to summer is this Memorial Weekend in several boating communities. Firstmate Controls produces the best boat lift controls and the best dock accessories on the market, all with the purpose to help keep you and your dock safe. Today we are talking about another important part of safety and boating... Becoming a licensed Missouri boater. Read on to learn whether or not you need to get a license and how to get officially certified.

Who Needs a License?

While anyone can take the official Boater's Education Course, it is only mandatory in Missouri for people born after January 1st, 1984. It's important to note that if you have a boater's license from another state, it will also be honored in Missouri.

What is a License For?

Some people think that you only need a Missouri Boating Certificate if you are driving a large boat. However, that is not the case. You are also required to have a certificate if you plan to operate a jet ski or any other powered water vehicle.

How Do I Get Certified?

The Missouri Boating Certificate is actually relatively easy to obtain. All you have to do is take the class - either in seat or online at www.boat-ed.com/missouri/ - and then pass an exam to earn your official certification.

How Often Do I Have to Renew?

Never! Once you have taken the class and passed the test, then you will receive your life-long Boater Education Card.

What Does it Cost?

Taking the course to get certified is only $41.50. Signing up for the course also gives you access to a lot of resources that can help you learn important information and pass the exam. You will have two chances to pass the exam and don't have to pay the fee until you've passed.

How Long Does it Take?

The class itself doesn't take very long and can be completed in one day if you are able to set aside the time. Once you have passed the exam, you are officially certified! It could take about 45 days, however, for the card to arrive in the mail. In the meantime, it's important that you carry a printed version of your temporary operating permit if you plan on operating a watercraft.

Stay Safe During Your Day of Boating

Boating is an incredibly fun activity and a great way to welcome the summer! It can also be dangerous if you are not careful. Be sure to properly prepare for your day on the water by taking the Boater's Education Course, packing safety supplies on the boat, and using a Firstmate Controls remote boat lift control system as you board the boat for a great day!
