How to Make a Family Boating Box

Right now there are very few things we can do outside of our homes, but thankfully boating with our household is one of them! Enjoying a beautiful day on the water is a great way to break the monotony of being stuck in the house and be able to bond with the family. Firstmate Controls has all the products you need to get started with a great day from the dock, but what about once you're on the water? Keep reading to learn about our tips on how to create a boating box for your family!

The Boating Box Itself

Choose a box that will hold up well (i.e. not cardboard) and that is easy to grab when you're headed out to the boat for a fun day on the water. You get bonus points if the box is see-through so you can tell whether or not everything is stocked and ready to go without having to open it up and fish around for the necessary items.

First-Aid Kit

You never know what could happen out on the water. It's best to be prepared with a basic first-aid kit that can help patch up scrapes, scratches, and minor issues you may encounter during your day on the water.

Hand Sanitizer & Wipes

Lake water is not the cleanest thing on the planet. Make sure you and your family are safe from germs by using sanitizing wipes and hand sanitizer when you come out of the water. This is especially important before you start eating or snacking with your hands.

Sunscreen

This is an important item for obvious reasons. Having a backup bottle of sunscreen could save you from a bad sunburn that you may regret for days or weeks. Sometimes it's hard to tell how much is left in a bottle, so it never hurts to have extra available in case.

Extra Towels

Most everyone will grab their towel on the way out of the house, but sometimes one is not enough. Maybe you're swimming at a stopping point for awhile, you get out and dry off to spend some time on board, then jump back in. When you get out, your soaking wet towel may not do much good to dry you off a second time. There are also sometimes spills, splashing over the edge, and other instances where you may wish you brought a few extra towels. That is why it is a good idea to keep a few extra in your grab box for a day on the boat.

Plastic Bags

If you don't have waterproof bags for your valuables and electronics, the next best thing is to have a plastic bag. This can help keep your phone, watch, and cash dry in case there are any spills or splashes that come straight for your device. No one wants to have their day ruined by having their phone waterlogged. Keep a box of Ziploc bags in the Grab Box so that everyone can keep their valuables safe from moisture during the day.

Shoes!

You would be surprised how easy it is to forget shoes when you're getting on your boat from your own dock. Just in case you need to get out to fill up on gas or grab your dock-side pick-up meal, it's a good idea to have a pair of sandals or flip flops with you at all times. Grab an extra pair (Some stores have them available for just a dollar!) and keep them in the Grab Box for those times when you've forgotten your shoes and need to hop out for a moment.
