4 Boating Projects to Tackle this Winter

Many of us boaters have already pulled our boats from the water, but wishing we hadn't just yet with this mild winter we're having so far. If you've got cabin fever already and are looking for any possible excuse to visit your boat this winter, we've got some boating projects for you to take care of while your boat's out of the water.

1. Clean Your Boat Thoroughly
While you've probably kept your boat pretty clean throughout the boating season, you can't truly give your boat the deep clean it deserves until you pull it out of the water for winter. Now is the time to give your engine compartment a good cleaning and change out the oil absorbs. Recover your worn out cushions. Organize loose items in your lockers and cabinets into plastic totes and waterproof trays.

2. Fix Any Fiberglass Damage
You can easily fix many scratches and nicks in a fiberglass boat. Fix stress cracks, dock dings and other fiberglass injuries to the best of your ability while your boat is out of the water during the winter. This will allow you to thoroughly inspect your boat from top to bottom. You may notice some damage you couldn't see while your boat was in water or in the lift. If extensive damage has occurred to the fiberglass of your boat, you may be better off to let a marine repair professional fix the damage.

3. Restore Your Boat's Luster
It may not seem like it, but a season on the water can cause a lot of wear and tear to your boat's paint job. Sure, you may have hired someone to clean the hull while in water over the summer, but it's just not enough to maintain that 'new' look. Compound and wax your hull to restore the luster and get rid of that milky film. Clean and polish your oxidized aluminum rails and hardware. Repaint the bottom if it's needed.

4. Upgrade Your Lift with a Boat Lift Remote Control System
By installing a boat lift remote control system to your lift, you can improve your chances of avoiding damage to your boat and lift during the busy season. The Firstmate Boat Lift Remote Control System allows you to program settings to lower, raise, and stop at the specific levels you set. Using Firstmate controls is easy whether boating alone or with guests. Using our remote controlled systems gives you an extra set of hands from inside the boat for getting your boat on or off the lift.

Now's the perfect time to knock out some of these boating projects. Once spring hits and you've got your like new looking boat out on the water, you'll appreciate the time you took to check these tasks off of your list. Plus, it'll give you some much needed quality time this winter with your boat that you so longingly miss!
