Getting to Know Your Marine Equipment Experts!

When it comes to selecting your marine electronic equipment, many folks feel more comfortable working with people they know and trust. We understand this because we feel the same! So this week, we at Firstmate Controls want to give you a little insight on how we got started, and who you're working with when you purchase a Firstmate product. So, without further ado, let's take a look at what co-owner Julie Figura has to say!

Q&A with Julie Figura

Q: Can you tell us a little about Firstmate and your staff?
A: "John is an electrical engineer by trade.  He began his career at St. Louis Music designing amplifiers; went on to satellite communications for Muzak.  He has a strong background in wireless communications – so when I initially was hurt (see last week's blog for the story), the Firstmate was a challenge/labor of love (no pun intended) to design.  We have had design partners to help enhance our product line for the last 15 years.  They include people John has worked with since the early 1990’s.  Our employees have included college students in a mentor program; family members (some of whom have passed on); and current employees who work hard on our Firstmate team!"

Q: You've been in business for quite a while now. What's something that you pride the company in?
A: "We have never been one to seek awards or recognition.  We keep busy building product, looking for new design changes and making enhancements from our customer’s comments.  Good customer relations and support is enough reward."

Q: What's your role in the community?
A: "John and I personally are involved in our church and school community.  We volunteer at many events and help with fundraising.  I have chaired several committees in our church and school community as well."

Manufacturing

At Firstmate Controls everything is built from the ground up from the time you place your order until it goes out the door. We begin with heavy gauge steel frame design. We use high quality welding to optimize support, and finish it off with a powder coating so it can stand up to the weather and water on your dock. Any electronic components are tested in pre-production and again prior to shipping. As your system goes down the line, it is spot checked for Quality Control and put together by our knowledgeable staff. Prior to shipping, all systems are fully tested, valves pressure checked, and packaged ready to be delivered to your door or your dock.

Firstmate is dedicated to the design, manufacture, distribution and servicing of the finest wireless electronic equipment for the recreational marine industry. We offer full remote control manufacturing capability using state of the art equipment. Complete systems can be installed for you, or shipped ready for any application.
