Look for Cracks and Damage


It is to be expected that a used boat will have a few scratches and wear from use, but if there is significant damage, then it may be best to steer clear from that particular boat. Cracked fiberglass could just be cosmetic, or it could mean that the boat has significant issues and could even take on water. Serious damage to the outside of a boat could mean that it will not fare well out on the water, especially on a busy day of boating on the Lake.

Check the Seats


Seats can tell you a lot about the condition of a boat. For example, make sure they are not loose in the flooring. Loose seating could mean that the floor is starting to rot out, which is very bad news. Or, it could simply mean that a bolt is a little loose, which is easy to fix. Seats faded and cracked by exposure to the sun, while telling of the boat's age and care, are just cosmetic issues that can be fixed with new upholstery. 

Electronics


Before you sign on the dotted line, make sure all of the electronics are in working order. Make sure light bulbs, speakers, etc. are all functioning well. While they are easy to fix, a lot of failures combined could mean that there is an issue in the wiring which could be more expensive.



Drive It! 


Choose a dealership that has the ability to allow a test drive of the boat before you take the plunge. Without driving the boat, it could be difficult to know how well it rides, the functionality of the engine, etc. for yourself. Instead of just taking someone's word, take it out for a test drive!
