How to Get Ready for Boating

With Labor Day coming up, there are going to be a lot of people out on the water enjoying one of the last weekends of summer. To help get you ready for your day out on the boat, Firstmate Controls has prepared a checklist of things to do and pack for a successful day out. As the best boat lift control manufacturer, we know w thing or two about boating. Keep reading to learn more!

Boat Checklist

Obviously, one of the most important things to prepare will be the boat itself. Make sure everything is good to go before setting out for the day so that you don't run into any safety issues or missing items once you're out.

  • Check the gas tank
  • Make sure you have boat bumpers ready
  • Double-check the life jacket counts and capacities for your group
  • Ensure the anchor is in good working order
  • Make sure you have alert flags and a fire extinguisher on board

Safety Checklist

While boating, it's very important that you keep yourself and your whole crew safe. No one imagines that they will run into an emergency, but it is important to be prepared because you never know what might happen. And while not everything on this list is for an emergency, it's important to keep your skin and eyes protected during the day.

  • First aid kit - Include bandages and other quick fixes until you can get to shore
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Life jackets - Again, make sure they fit your group appropriately
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug spray
  • Sunglasses
  • Water - It can be easy to get dehydrated sitting in the sun all day
  • Floating phone case

Clothing Checklist

It may seem obvious to you what to wear out on the boat, but it's a good reminder to make sure you're adequately prepared.

  • Swimming suit
  • Quick cover up - In case you need to dock and use a restroom
  • Change of clothes - You may decide to stop and eat lakefront
  • Towel
  • Flip flops or sandals
  • Hat
