9:25 AM

May 18-24 is National Safe Boating Week! From family friendly events at marinas to vessel safety checks, the goal of this important campaign is to raise awareness about responsible boating. More importantly, the goal is to encourage wearing life jackets when out on the water. So in honor of this very special and important national event, the best recreational marine equipment company is sharing with you some helpful and educational information about National Safe Boating Week and how you can spread awareness!

Boating Incident Statistics You Need to Know

According to the US Coast Guard Boating Safety Division, in 2015 the number one cause of death during a boating incident was drowning, with a staggering 428 deaths. 352 of those were reported to not be wearing life jackets. In Missouri alone, there were 17 persons killed and 70 persons injured in recreational boating crashes. This year so far, the Missouri Water Patrol has reported 50 boating/drowning incidents. Of those incidents it was reported that more than half of the victims were not wearing safety jackets.

What is National Safe Boating Week?

The purpose for National Safe Boating Week is to stress the importance of wearing a life jacket while out on the water. Life jackets can be the determining factor between life and death in many boating accidents. With the national annual average of deaths from boating related incidents being roughly 700, and a staggering 8 out of 10 victims NOT wearing a life jacket, it's of extreme importance to raise awareness.

How Can You Help Raise Awareness?

So how can you do your part to help raise awareness? We thought you'd never ask! Here are some fun ways to get the word out and draw attention to this simple precautionary measure that could save the life of someone you know:
  • Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day (May 17, 2019): This is a fun opportunity to educate coworkers or building mates about the proper life jacket for them, different styles, and how to use an inflatable life jacket by wearing your life jacket to work.
  • Ready, Set, Wear It! Life Jacket World Record Day (May 19, 2019): Thousands of people from around the world attempt to set the world record for the most life jackets worn and inflatable life jackets inflated on one day.
  • Grassroots Outreach Program: Get the community involved! Each year, organizations and individuals are able to apply for resources to be used in their own safe boating initiatives. Take advantage of these resources to help educate the community.

Make Sure You Have the Right Life Jacket for You.

You don’t want your life jacket too large or too small. A snug fit is a proper fit. Remember, life jackets for adults do not work for children.
  • Make sure the life jacket is properly fastened.
  • Check to make sure all straps, buckles or zippers are secure.
  • Hold your arms straight up over your head.
  • Ask a friend to grasp the tops of the arm openings and gently pull up.

Inspect Your Life Jacket

Make sure there are no rips, mildew, or waterlogging. It's important to maintain your life jackets properly. Hand wash them with a mild detergent to prevent them from mildewing. Let them dry fully before storing them after use. Store them in a dry place. You should carefully check over your life jackets before each use to ensure proper functionality.
Remember to always use your life jacket for its intended purpose and refer to the owner’s manual for specific maintenance requirements.
