7 Epic Ways to Spend the Day on the Water

With the summer heat picking up, the best way to have fun and stay cool is to spend the day on the water.  There is nothing like a good day on the lake to keep the whole family entertained.  At Firstmate Controls, we are passionate about getting people out on the water.  We have compiled a list of our 7 favorite ways to enjoy a day on the lake or river that are sure to make your weekend a memorable one.

1. Go for a Cruise

Take the boat out on the water and explore all your lake or river has to offer.  Whether you prefer a slow, romantic cruise or a fast-paced joy ride, either one is a fantastic way to spend the day.  One of our favorite activities is to find a cove or inlet and anchor for the afternoon.  Pack picnic lunches for the kids, or pack a cooler and link up with your friends for an impromptu boat party.

2. Grab a Paddle

Taking out a kayak or canoe is a laid-back alternative to boating that allows you to get closer to nature and take the stream less traveled by.  You can paddle deep into your cove, across the river to check out a nearby island, or just enjoy the ebb and flow of the open water.  Kayaking or canoeing is also a great way to explore the many rivers and streams that Missouri has to offer.  All you have to do is find a location to drop in and float downstream to a take-out point.  Plus, kayaking or canoeing offers the added benefit of getting a workout in without you even noticing.

3. Test Your Balance

Speaking of a workout, you can try paddleboard yoga if you're feeling ambitious.  Whether you're a yoga expert or just looking for an exercise alternative while you're on vacation, paddleboard yoga is a fun new trend to try.  Start by paddling around to get a feel for the board, then try some beginner yoga moves.  Once you get the hang of it, challenge yourself with something more difficult.  We recommend wearing a swimsuit because chances are, you'll fall in at least once.

4.  Learn Something New

Waterskiing, wakeboarding, or wake surfing are ultra fun and will keep you and your kids entertained for hours.  While they do require skill, they are all fairly easy to learn if you are relatively coordinated and in good health.  If you already know how to water ski or wakeboard, teaching your kids is a fun way to bond.  If you don't know how, you can try and learn with them.  This will definitely result in some laughs, but either way, your kids will think you are the coolest.

5. Take the Kids (or Your Friends) on a Wild Ride

If you want the same thrill as watersports but with less skill required, give tubing a try.  Pretty much anyone can enjoy this activity, from little kids to teenagers and adults.  It all depends on the boat driver and how extreme he or she makes the ride.  Just make sure to communicate with the tuber beforehand to determine if they want to take it easy or go for a full adrenaline rush.

6. Get the Catch of the Day

What better way to relax than waiting for the fish to bite?  You can fish right off land or cruise around in a boat or kayak to find the best fishing holes.  The fish tend to bite in the mornings and evenings, so fishing is a perfect way to start or end your day on the water.  It is also a fun activity for kids.  They will have fun playing with the bait and seeing the fish, and their first catch will be a great photo-opp.

7. Take a Dip

Going for a swim is the classic way to cool off on a hot summer day.  Whether you want to relax and lounge on a floatie or start a bellyflop contest, you're guaranteed to feel refreshed.  If you want to up the level of fun and impress your kids, build a rope swing or dive platform (only if the water is deep enough).

These summer activities are not only fun ways to cool off on a hot day, but they are also great ways to make lasting memories with family and friends.  Next time you have a free weekend, skip the pool and take your family out on the water to enjoy the beautiful lakes, rivers, and streams that Missouri has to offer.
